Does America Owe Scotland (And William Wallace) For Its Freedom?

(Newswire.net — December 17, 2014) Thomson, Illinois — Does America owe its independence and freedom in part to Scottish hero William Wallace and his countrymen some 400 years prior to the Revolutionary War?

That’s what some scholars believe, according to an intriguing new blog post by author and audio theater producer Bill Heid, who says American’s struggle for independence “has a direct relation to the struggle and ultimate victory of the colonists in the American Revolution.”

“The parallel can be seen in America’s Declaration of Independence and that of the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320,” Heid writes.

Heid’s latest audio theater project, In Freedom’s Cause, recounts the story of Wallace, spotlighting his Christian faith in a way that modern-day renditions such as Braveheart do not.

Heid’s blog, “Why Americans Should Thank Scotland (And William Wallace) For Their Freedom,” says there are other parallels.

“About half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent, including Thomas Jefferson himself; in fact a few of the signers were former ex-patriates of the Jacobite rebellions (uprisings intended to re-install James II of Scotland as king of England),” Heid writes. “Among the colonists that fought in the Revolutionary War and gave the ultimate sacrifice, a large number were of Scottish ancestry.”

In Freedom’s Cause follows a boy, Ned, as he watches history unfold and tags along with Wallace and the eventual king of Scotland, Robert the Bruce, in their fight for Scottish freedom.

Heid and Heirloom Audio Productions released their first project, Under Drake’s Flag, last year.

The CDs are based on G.A. Henty books and recorded in the same genre of Adventures In Odyssey. In fact, some crew members from that Focus on the Family production worked with Heirloom Audio.

Actress Chris Anthony – who hosted Adventures In Odyssey on radio – was impressed.

“I haven’t been this excited since the beginning of Adventures In Odyssey,” Anthony said.

Each 2-CD set is accompanied by a study guide and discussion starter.

They have received high marks from homeschooling expert and curriculum reviewer Cathy Duffy.

“While other publishers have created outstanding audio recordings, both abridged and unabridged, the new presentations from Heirloom Audio are really something special,” Duffy wrote. “The script writers, the sound engineer, the actors, the creator of the musical score, and others involved in making these productions have been involved in major, critically-acclaimed productions, and their expertise shows! These are really top-notch, audio theater experiences as well as an entertaining way to learn some history.”
