AES Discloses Advice on Reducing Electricity without Spending More

(Newswire.net — February 23, 2016) Arlington, TEXAS — Experienced with first-class electrical repair and remodel work, Accurate Electrical Systems now provides advice on electricity reduction that anyone can do without expensive purchases or electrical service. Energy.gov provides professional insight on energy audits, upgrading to solar or wind, or even details on rebates and tax credits. The advice AES is providing, however, does not focus on pricey upgrades or finances at all. They concentrate on what any electrician will admit: changing electricity usage and habits at home can lower energy use and electrical bills.

Here are a few areas to focus on.

Lighting

Purchasing LEDs or other energy efficient lights is an important step, but it’s how you use them that maximizes efficiency.

  • Turn off lights when leaving a room. It’s easy to walk away and forget the light was turned on, only to go back hours later and realize this, when it’s too late to do anything.
  • During the day, open shades and curtains to let in natural daylight.
  • If dimmers are installed, adjust to provide just the right amount of light.
  • Properly use controls and timers to manage when lighting is used. Timing the system right will save a few seconds through automation. It will also conserve energy by ensuring lights are on when people are home and turned off when they’re not.

 Appliances/Electronics

  • Set refrigerators to power-save or manually set the temperature anywhere from 30 to 42°F. Also be sure to dust off the coils to maximize efficiency.
  • Put more items in the freezer as less energy is used than if it’s empty or only partially filled.
  • Wash the fullest possible load of clothing and/or do several at once. The dryer won’t have to heat itself up again for the next run.
  • Use dishwashers in economy mode and turn them off when the wash cycle is done. Air drying dishes prevents heat from escaping into the room.
  • Use a power strip for electronics and turn it off to save energy when things aren’t used.
  • Unplug electronics running in “standby” mode.
  • Pull the plug on battery chargers when not being used.
  • Set computers to sleep/hibernate instead of using screen savers.

 Heating/Cooling

Good habits include raising the temperature slowly, lowering thermostats to the lowest comfortable temperature, and limiting use of portable heaters. Also keep air vents clear. If using an air compressor, keep it in an open space. Don’t turn the thermostat off when on vacation; rather set it to 60°F. Also:

  • Run ceiling fans counter-clockwise in summer and clockwise in winter.
  • Keep exterior windows and doors closed when air-conditioning is on.
  • Change or clean A/C filters regularly.
  • When it’s warm, use shades, blinds, awnings, and greenery to keep sunlight out of the home.
  • Keep interior doors open to allow free flow of cool air.

 Water

  • Run wash cycles with cold water.
  • Turn water heaters off if leaving for a few days.
  • Take shorter showers.
  • Lower the water heater to 120°F, which is hot enough for dishes and showers.

“Many people don’t realize they can save energy by just altering a few habits,” Maggie Smith, President of AES, said. “Any electrician on our “A-Team” can fix problems to correct efficiency issues. It’s really the day-to-day use of electricity that impacts energy consumption the most. We hope these tips will help customers be more efficient and save on their electrical bills too.”
