( — August 3, 2020) Orlando, FL — Scientists have long been investigating and warning against the triggers off depression. There are theories suggesting it is caused by brain chemical imbalances, but some research studies suggest it can be triggered by external factors.

A study involving Chinese adolescents has found a link between digital media use and depression.

In this new research, it has been found that adolescents in China who either spent more time on screen activities or less time on non-screen activities were at a significantly increased risk of depression.

It is worth noting that screen activities include surfing the Web or watching TV. Non-screen activities, on the other hand, include physical activity.

The findings of this study were published in the journal Heliyon.

The investigators noted there was a greater link between depression and the growing use of digital media among girls than boys.

In 2016, it has been found over two billion individuals used digital media globally. It is worth being warned that by 2020, it is projected to rise to almost three billion.

According to lead investigator Jie Zhang, PhD, digital media, as compared to more traditional media such as television, have profoundly changed the modern life of the average Chinese citizen.

Zhang is from the Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing, China, and State University of New York Buffalo State, Buffalo, NY, USA.

It is worth being warned that this mental health issue affects over 300 million people worldwide. What makes it even more alarming is that it is also considered to be the leading cause of disability.

As more and more people struggle from depression, experts continue to carry out studies to look for the most effective cure for the condition.

It is important to note that good bacteria like probiotics have been found beneficial against depression. This is believed to be due to the fact that the brain and gut are connected. Probiotics have been scientifically found to work wonders in protecting and enhancing gut health.

More particularly, experts suggest that probiotics have an influence on mood.

According to lead author Qin Xiang Ng, MBBS, of KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore, the effects of probiotic supplementation on depressive symptomatology are probably modest, even in depressed individuals.

It is worth noting that probiotics have been found to be beneficial in offering a range of health benefits. It is best to consider its use especially that low levels of these good bacteria inside the body are linked with some undesirable health consequences.
