Research Reveals Link In Between Sleep Apnea and Increased Risk of Dementia

( — September 30, 2021) Orlando, FL — Sleep apnea and dementia are undeniably two different conditions. However, in a study, researchers found a potential link between them. 

This research was carried out by scientists from Monash University, and its findings were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.  

The findings have shown the link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and increased odds of dementia.  

According to Dr. Melinda Jackson, severe OSA is linked to an increase in a protein, called beta-amyloid, that builds upon the walls of the arteries in the brain and increases the risk of dementia. 

Dr. Jackson who spearheaded the study is from the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health.

This research involved 34 human subjects with recently diagnosed untreated OSA as well as 12 individuals who were asymptomatic for sleep disorders. It looked into the associations between brain amyloid burden using a PET brain scan, and measures of sleep, demographics, and mood. 

According to the researchers, the OSA group had a higher amyloid burden, less time spent in stage N3 sleep, and poorer sleep efficiency. It is worth noting that stage N3 sleep is a regenerative period where the body doesn’t just heal but also repair itself. 

It is worth noting that this common sleep disorder actually affects around 1 billion people around the globe.  

It is found to be triggered by airway collapse during sleep, which usually leads to intermittent dips in oxygen levels and arousals from sleep.

“The significance of finding the association between increased brain amyloid in patients with OSA will allow for further research to explore in more detail the implications of treating OSA for reducing dementia risk,” Dr. Jackson said.
