(Newswire.net — November 12, 2021) Orlando, FL — Food is not just a necessity for human survival but also for overall health maintenance. It is, however, worth noting that food choices play a significant role in the body’s protection against diseases.

A study was carried out and published in The BMJ.

In this research, it has been found that a higher intake of fruit, vegetables, and whole-grain foods is linked with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The findings of this research suggest that even a modest increase in the intake of these foods as part of a healthy diet could help prevent type 2 diabetes.

This study, which was carried out by a team of European researchers, looked into the link between blood levels of vitamin C and carotenoids with risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is worth noting carotenoids are pigments found in colorful fruits and vegetables.

It was based on 9,754 adults who developed new-onset type 2 diabetes and a comparison group of 13,662 adults who remained free of diabetes during follow-up from among 340,234 participants.

The participants took part in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-InterAct study in eight European countries.

In comparison to those with the lowest composite biomarker score, it has been found there was a reduced risk by 50 percent in people whose biomarker score was in the top 20 percent of the population.

The researchers found an intermediate risk in individuals with biomarker scores between these two extremes. They also calculated that every 66 grams per day increase in total fruit and vegetable intake was linked with a 25 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Foods are loaded with nutrients that could combat diseases like diabetes. It is important to keep in mind that these include nutrients like B vitamins, which scientists have been researching due to their medicinal benefits.

In some studies, it has been found that B vitamins work wonders in battling diseases like diabetes. These nutrients could enhance overall health and their deficiencies are associated with certain symptoms and medical conditions.
