Research Reveals Blood Sodium Levels Impact Cognition in Older Adults

( — April 30, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over decades, researchers have been investigating the remedies helpful for cognitive health. Some studies even suggest that certain food ingredients may have varying impacts on the brain.

A study was carried out and published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN).

Kristen Nowak, Ph.D., MPH (University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus), and her colleagues carried out this study.

They looked into information on 5435 asymptomatic community-dwelling men aged >65 years. The subjects were tracked for a median of 4.6 years. It is worth noting that a total of 100 men had serum levels indicative of hyponatremia.

In this research, it has been found that a condition called hyponatremia, which pertains to lower levels of sodium in the blood, is associated with declines in cognitive function with advancing age.

The study findings raise the possibility that managing sodium levels may actually aid in preserving cognition as people age.

According to experts, hyponatremia occurs when the level of sodium in the blood is below 135 mmol/L. Further, it has been previously thought that mild hyponatremia.

Recent studies reveal that mild hyponatremia, which was once thought to be asymptomatic, may be linked with the increased risks of falls, gait disturbances, attention deficits, cardiovascular events, and even premature death.

Experts reveal the link between severe hyponatremia and cognitive impairment and neurological disturbances. However, the association between cognition in older adults and different levels of serum sodium has remained uncertain.

In the study, the scientists particularly found that slightly lower levels of sodium in the blood were linked with both cognitive impairment and declines in cognitive function over time.

Men with levels of 126-140 mmol/L were 30 percent more susceptible to having a cognitive impairment at baseline compared to men with sodium levels of 141-142 mmol/L. They also were 37 percent more likely to experience cognitive decline over time.

“Because both slightly lower serum sodium levels and mild changes in cognitive function are common occurrences with advancing age, future research on this topic is important — including determining whether correcting lower sodium levels affects cognitive function,” said Dr. Nowak.

Today, more and more researchers are looking into the best possible ways to protect cognitive health. It is also worth noting that there are certain remedies like the use of VitaBreeze Curcumin that could be helpful.

Curcumin has many therapeutic ingredients scientifically found helpful for brain health. VitaBreeze Curcumin is known for its high potency and purity, and what makes it all the more beneficial is that it comes with a customer satisfaction guarantee. (
