(Newswire.net — May 29, 2015) Middletown, RI –Fore!  It is that golf time again. And to help golfers get back into the swing, the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island offers some quick tips to maximize your game and minimize impact on the body.

The specific physical stress of golf is quite different that our standard day to day movement.  Line up your prep before lining up your putt.

Endurance training is the first component.  The game of golf is usually played over a three- to five-hour time period, requiring a certain level of endurance. Deadlifts and anterior reaches are good for working on endurance. Activities like walking, biking or swimming are also good endurance builders.

Next, joint mobility and stability should be considered. The explosive golf swing requires a high level of execution, coordination and power. Try standing with arms hanging at your sides (with or without weights) and gently leaning to one side. Repeat on the other side.  Work on your trunk and shoulders.  Golfers’ ability to turn their shoulders will be determined by the coordinated strength of their core and their ability to rotate through the spine. Various chopping and lifting exercises will help.

Another consideration is the training pelvic tilt.  If golfers are not conditioned properly, they will begin flexing their spine in order to address the ball, as opposed to hinging at the hip. On all fours, gently arch your back up toward the ceiling as you breathe in. On the exhale, gently push your belly button toward the floor and curve your back in the opposite direction, looking up toward the ceiling. Other flexibility outlets are yoga or tai chi.

Final tip.  Squat to pick up the ball or to set the ball on the tee instead of bending at the knees. Most golfers will bend and twist a bit to pick the ball out of the cup, which puts a lot of force on the muscles, joints and discs.

The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island, founded in 1918, is one of the oldest chiropractic associations in the country and represents over 60 of the practicing chiropractic physicians in the state of RI. Chiropractic is the largest non-drug health care profession in the US. The chiropractic profession has been affording relief for many types of health conditions naturally, without drugs and their potentially harmful side-effects, for over 100 years.

More and more scientific research is demonstrating the tremendous detrimental impact that subluxations have on the tissue of the body. Subluxation occurs when a joint is misaligned and causing pressure or irritation to the surrounding tissue and nerves, thereby effecting body function.

Chiropractors are trained in the detection, location, and correction of the vertebral subluxation.
