Research Now Shows the Gut’s Immune System Aids Food Processing

(Newswire.net — October 26, 2022) Orlando, FL — Scientists have been researching the various aspects of gut health and how it affects the body. There are even studies that looked into the gut’s immune system and its roles in certain bodily processes.

It is important to realize that the small intestine is considered to be the ground zero for the survival of animals. It is also found responsible for the absorption of nutrients vital to life. What makes it even more important is that it also combats toxic chemicals as well as life-threatening bacteria.

One study was carried out and published in the Science journal.

In this study, which was carried out by Yale researchers, it has been found that the immune system of the gut plays a critical role in these key processes.

The study findings have particularly shown that the immune system not just offers protection against pathogens but also regulates which nutrients are taken in. This may pave the way to insights regarding the origins of metabolic disease as well as malnutrition.

“We were surprised that the immune system was so involved in nutrition,” said first author Zuri Sullivan.

Sullivan is a former graduate student in the immunology department at Yale and now a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Hanna H. Gray postdoctoral fellow at Harvard.

“And the study lays the groundwork for understanding how this reciprocal interaction works,” the first author added.

Sullivan worked in the lab of senior author Ruslan Medzhitov, Yale’s Sterling Professor of Immunobiology, and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

He tried to see how the diets of humans as well as other animals can dramatically alter the organization of their digestive tracts.

Sullivan, Medzhitov, and a group of colleagues looked into how the large numbers of immune cells found inside intestinal tracts might influence nutrition. They found that a certain group of immune system cells can suppress the expression of interleukin-22 in mice.

These gamma delta cells also allow the intestinal cell walls to activate digestive enzymes and nutrient transporters.

It is always worth keeping in mind that maintaining gut health is vital for various aspects of health. It is even found vital to protect the body’s defenses. Some extra-strength formulas like Divine Bounty Digestive Enzymes may be helpful in delivering some gut health agents.
