Known in some circles as “The Flying Tomboulians”, Lee and Elizabeth Tomboulian share a deep love of American music. Steeped in the traditions of blues, jazz, folk and latin music, they offer a dazzling array of sounds to enjoy when they perform together in the duo setting.
In October 2012, they gave a spectacular performance of originals, standards and blues at the private concert space of Dick Leonard on the upper westside in NYC. The Tomboulians have been married for several years and perform together often.
New York born Lee Tomboulian leads the Weekly Reeders, an eclectic chamber ensemble which features Mr. Tomboulian on accordion. He also leads the Dallas Fort Worth based Brazilian Uruguayan ensemble Lee Tomboulian and Circo, which has two CDS available: North/South
Convergence and Return to Whenever.
Tomboulian plays with the Iris Ornig Trio every Wednesday in the meat packing district, NYC and with many of New York’s busiest band leaders, singers, and also, along with Elizabeth Tomboulian, sings with The Billy Harper Voices.
He has played accordion with composer Maria Schneider and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and piano with the great singer Jimmy Witherspoon, American jazz master tenor saxophonist and composer Benny Golson,
jazz trumpeter Terell Stafford, Cuban master drummer Horacio Hernandez, American pop, rock and jazz drummer, Greg Bissonette, jazz drummer and clinician, Steve Houghton, tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and many others.
An educator as well as a performer, Tomboulian has taught at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music and Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. Texas. His latest Cd is the solo effort
Imaginarium which has received rave reviews.
With a B.A. in composition from the University of Arkansas, his Masters in Music in Jazz Studies (piano
performance) at the University of North Texas and private studies with Art Lande and producer Hal Wilner at the Naropa Institute, Mr. Tomboulian brings a unique sound to every musical adventure he participates in. Rooted in the blues and gospel music, he has spent time with African American gospel music at St. Andrew Church of God in Christ in Denton, Texas.
Elizabeth Tomboulian is originally from Arkansas, the birthplace of the blues. She cut her teeth in Texas singing blues, folk, and gospel. A soulful and accomplished vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, she performs on piano, guitar and percussion.
Ms. Tomboulian turned toward jazz in Houston where she met and studied with saxophone and flute local legend, Tony Campisi. In New Orleans, Ms. Tomboulian played piano with the Charles Neville House Band and sang with The New Orleans Ladies at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
In Boulder Colorado Elizabeth’s shared the stage at The Blue Note, with Tom Scott and The LA Express, Charlie Musselwhite and Alto Saxophonist, Richie Cole.
She is featured singing wordlessly in unison with Dallas sax and flute master Pete Brewer on two CD’S by Circo. Touring has brought the duo to Uraguay at Medio y Medio near Punte del Este and the two make frequent and periodic trips to Japan.
Elizabeth Tomboulian will be performing in Hamamatsu, Japan with her Japanese band in April, 2014.
Studies at the Omega Institute in 2005 with Bobby McFerrin, Joey Blake, Judi Donaghy, Roger Treece, and David Worm have expanded Ms. Tomboulian’s work to include sound and energy healing. She has studied extensively with Rhiannon and sound energy healing master, Judith Kahealani Lynne.
She and Lee sing with the the great tenor saxophonist, Billy Harper and The Billy Harper Voices. Mr. Harper brings his Voices to Zebs, NYC, one Sunday every other month. The concerts are produced by Cobi Narita and The Jazz Center of New York.
