( — February 18, 2019) Orlando, FL — Due to the increasing rate of antibiotic resistance, more and more clinicians and researchers are investigating on safer alternatives. One is cranberry, which has a long history of medicinal use.

A report was published in the Journal of Medicinal Food. Researchers in this study suggest that cranberries have chemicals that inhibit infection-causing bacteria from sticking to the cells linking the urinary tract.

In the United States, UTIS have burdened the healthcare system with over $2 billion in treatment costs annually. It has also been identified to be a common problem in those with urinary catheter. The development of UTI is pointed on the adhesion of the E.coli bacteria to the cells that line the urinary tract.

One of the chemicals that cranberry contains is proanthocyanidins (PACs), which have been found to prevent E.coli. It is worth mentioning that 85 percent of all UTI cases are due to E.coli.

Paola Pinzón-Arango, Yatao Liu, and Terri Camesano, from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Massachusetts found that the longer bacteria were exposed to PACS of cranberry juice, the higher the decrease in bacterial adhesion.

UTIs are painful and many sufferers are prescribed with antibiotics. It is undeniable that this type of medication is helpful for destroying E.coli. However, it is difficult or even dangerous to ignore that it causes side effects.

In addition to also killing the beneficial bacteria, which are good for health, this type of medication also causes antibiotic resistance. This is why it may be beneficial to resort to safer alternatives like cranberry.

It is also worth mentioning that cranberry also contains a sugar called D-mannose. This type of beneficial sugar also works like PACs in preventing E.coli adhesion.

This therapeutic sugar can be found in cranberry, and is widely studied due to its healing benefits. It has been found to work by stopping bacteria from sticking to the cells lining the urinary tract. This is effective in preventing bacteria from triggering infection.

D-mannose is widely studied nowadays, and is consumed through supplementation. Divine Bounty D-mannose is a formula consumers may take into account using. It is highly potent, and is loaded with the UTI-fighting effects of D-mannose.
