Having Negative Body Image Increases Suicidal Tendencies, Experts Warn

A study was carried out by the investigators at Bradley Hospital, Butler Hospital, and Brown Medical School.

The researchers in this study have found an association between negative body image issues and a heightened likelihood of anxiety, depression, and suicidality in adolescents. It is worth noting that the subjects were compared to adolescents with other psychiatric ailments and those that did not have intense dissatisfaction over their appearance.

The researchers assessed the prevalence and clinical correlates of body image concerns in this research. These particularly include body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), (such as bulimia or anorexia), eating disorders (ED), and other clinically significant issues concerning shape/weight.

This research also involved adolescent inpatients at Bradley Hospital, which is the country’s first psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents. 

It is worth mentioning that a classic type of BDD refers to one’s preoccupation with an imagined physical defect in appearance. It could also pertain to a vastly exaggerated concern about a minor defect, such as a crooked nose or imperfect complexion. 

According to lead author, Jennifer Dyl, Ph.D., the findings underscore just how central feelings about one’s appearance tend to be in the world of teenagers and how impairing these concerns can be.
